Bear Knife Stick Pigeon recorded live 2-1-11 at The Musicquarium Lounge (Seattle WA).

Bear Knife Stick Pigeon is an improvised jazz ensemble focused on the groove and features seasoned Seattle players and some of the city’s best up and coming jazz performers. Formed in the Fall of 2010, the quartet includes Jacob Stickney (sax), Jose Gonzales (keys), Donovan Pfeifer (drums) and Dave Kurtiak (bass). Influenced by jazz giants such as John Coltrane, Chris Potter, Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, Theolonius Monk, Dr. Lonnie Smith, improvisation masters like Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Medeski Martin & Wood and The Bad Plus as well as funk legends like James Brown, Average White Band and Parliament, Bear Knife Stick Pigeon is greater than the sum of its parts.

The core of Bear Knife Stick Pigeon is the rhythm section of Donovan Pfeifer (drums) and Dave Kurtiak (bass). Together they have laid down the foundation and groove for over 10 years as the rhythm section for The Combustion Collective, How Now Brown Cow, Ham Sam Ich and other projects. Don’s playing is dynamic, tasty, focused, ferocious and calm, all at the same time. Kurtiak always provides a solid backbone along with colorful accents and solos often layered by his use of effects. Jose Gonzales brings joy to the rooms he plays in, both as a pianist and vocalist. His performances are always a unique experience. Firmly rooted in jazz, Jose can be seen around Seattle performing with The Jose Gonzales Trio, Spekulation, and various other projects. Jacob Stickney (sax) is the young lion of the quartet. A recent graduate of Cornish, Jacob has been a regular at The Teaching and The Hang as well as adding his unique voice sitting in with McTuff and How Now Brown Cow. If that’s not enough, he’s also a member of En Root and leader of his own group, Stick Trio. His playing will show you that he’s got something to say and with his killer chops, you’ll want to be listening.

Together they are Bear Knife Stick Pigeon. Their music is full of energy and features dynamic musicianship with a purpose: to bring it.

about

Dave Kurtiak Seattle, Washington

There is something about the low sub-sonic feeling of bass that has and will always amaze me.

My influences and background are as varied as my playing. Some of my favorites include a list of who's who on bass - Michael Manring, Jaco, Rocco Prestia, Stu Hamm, Stanley Clarke, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and so many others.

My current projects include How Now Brown Cow and A Modest Menagerie.
